Sexual Assault Awareness Month Events

To bring awareness and support survivors of sexual assault, Title IX and the Peer Drop-In Center will be hosting various events on campus. 

Changing Campus Culture Survey

All Month

Changing Campus Climate Survey that will run all month. This survey increases SSU’s capacity to prevent and respond to sexual assault. Students who take the survey during Take Back the Week can be entered for a chance to win an iPad and other prizes. Prize winners will be announced on Friday, April 7th.

Take Back The Week

April 3-7, 2023 

Take Back the Week is a week-long series of events highlighting sexual assault, healing, safety, and empowerment in which students and employees are encouraged to participate. During the week, students who complete the Changing Campus Climate Survey, participate in the poster contest, and attend events will be entered into prize drawings. Winners and prizes will be announced on April 7th.

What They Were Wearing

April 3-7, 2023
Morris University Center Lobby

A display of clothing that people were wearing when they were sexually assaulted will be displayed throughout the week. This event is open to the entire campus community.

Resource Fair

Stop by for sexual assault awareness resources and to support sexual assault survivors. Campus and community resources and groups will be available to share information. This event is open to the entire campus community.

Campus and Community Safety Town Hall

April 3, 2023 | 4:00pm-5:00pm
Morris University Center 215

The SSU Department of Public Safety, Scioto County Sheriff, and Portsmouth Police Department will be holding a Town Hall, Q&A-style event to address concerns about campus and community safety. This session will give the campus community an opportunity to ask about safety, processes in place, how to report, and how to stay safe. This event is open to the entire campus community.

Rise, Release, Regain

April 4, 2023 | 4:00pm-6:00pm
Morris University Center 214

SSU's Counseling Department and the Peer Drop-In Center will host a confidential support space for survivors of sexual assault. Participants can share their stories and work toward healing. As part of the program, participants will write and burn letters to symbolically release trauma. This event is only open to students. Only confidential resource employees may attend.

Bringing in the Bystander

Participants will learn how to be active bystanders and how to address tough situations they may encounter regarding sex-based violence. This event is open to the entire campus community.

Healing Yoga

A yoga instructor will host a trauma-informed yoga session centered around healing and releasing trauma. This event is open to the entire campus community.

Take Back the Night

April 6, 2023 | 3:00pm-6:00pm
Morris University Center Lobby

Take Back the Night is a program aimed at empowering survivors of sexual assault and allies on campus to feel safe and create an open environment. Activities and information will be in the MUC Lobby from 3:00pm-6:00pm. The activities will focus on building healthy relationships, identifying red flags, and processing trauma. At 6:00pm, the march to Tracy Park begins. Once there, a candlelight vigil will be held honoring sexual assault survivors. We will also hear from a few speakers. Bring the posters and banners you created to carry during the march. This event is open to the entire campus community.

Day of Support & Resources

The Peer Drop-In Center will be available for support and resources. Also, winners can stop by to pick up their prizes. This event is open to the entire campus community.

A native of Ghana, Okaidja Afroso weaves together cross-cultural influences to create hypnotic sonic landscapes. His unique artistic vision has led him to combine his native rhythms with unforeseen pairings of musical styles. Afroso hails from a family of musicians and storytellers from the fishing village of Kokrobite on Ghana’s west coast.
